Sprout Mural Frequently Asked Questions

The community of Allentown was awarded one of eight new murals to be funded by the Sprout Fund in Allegheny County. This was a huge collaborative effort with the people of the Allentown CDC, the Housing Authority of the City of Pittsburgh (HACP), and the Richard S. Caliguri Plaza Tenant Council (CTC) working closely over three months. Updates and photos of the progress will be posted here, as well some frequently asked questions to help you better understand the project.

Where will this mural be placed?

The mural will be place on the front southern face of Caliguri Plaza, directly above the Tetter-Totter Day Care Center. We hope to incorporate both the left and right sides of this unique wall to make a magnificent mural that will be the centerpiece of Allentown's business district.

What will the mural look like?

The community took a vote and have chosen Design 2, by Lucas Stock.

Who is on this initial mural-committee?

There are representatives from each of the three entities that I listed above and from the general community, as well as site coordinators from Sprout. Those people are:

Allentown CDC: Judy Hackel, President; Ken Wolfe, Vice President; Harry Wolfe, Board Member; Tom Smith, Treasurer; Michael Assad, AmeriCorpsVISTA; Maureen Kennedy, AmeriCorpsVISTA.

HACP: Michelle Ralston, Real Estate Asset Manager Region III; Regina Branch, Caliguri Site Manager

CTC: Martha Jones, President.

Community Members: Joe Hackel, Josh Wiechmann.

Sprout Fund Cooridnators: Danelle Crumrime, Danika Kazmer.

Who is Lucas Stock?

Lucas Stock is a previous Sprout Public Art muralist, his “Celestial Weaving Girl” mural graces the Midwife Center for Birth and Women’s Health on Penn Avenue in the Strip District. Lucas received his bachelor of arts in Fine Art/Art History from Indiana University of PA (2005). He also holds an associate degree in graphic design from the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.

Can I be part of the process?

YES! Although the inital design has been chosen now, there will be two to three meetings in the next month where we as a community can come together with Mr. Stock and our mural committee listed above to iron out all of the details and things that we would like to tweek or add to his wonderful design. Check back here for meeting announcments.

Who is paying for this?

The Sprout Fund is paying for placing the mural on the wall. Any maintenance on the site after it is finished is the responsibility of the HACP and the Allentown CDC. The Sprout Fund will touch up the mural if any damage is inflicted on it due to malicious intent or acts of nature.

What is the Sprout Fund?

The Sprout Fund is a non-profit organization supporting innovative ideas and grassroots community projects that are catalyzing change in Pittsburgh. For more information click here.

When will work begin?
